Riding the Blue Ridge Parkway

July 2013 -

Riding the Blue Ridge Parkway is one of the most scenic mountainous motorcycle rides we have ever experienced. We began this trip on June 28th from North Bay Ontario Canada on our way to Sarasota Florida. We decided to cover 2 "bucket list" rides. The first was to ride the Blue Ridge Parkway and the second to ride the Tail of the Dragon .

These two rides are definitely rides you will want to put on your bucket list as well. Let's start with the Blue Ridge Parkway. We got on the Parkway in Waynesboro West Virginia and rode it for the entire day. The Blue Ridge Parkway is a National Parkway and All-American Road in the United States, noted for its scenic beauty. It runs for 469 miles (755 km) through twenty-nine Virginia and North Carolina counties, mostly along the Blue Ridge, a major mountain chain that is part of the Appalachian Mountains.

These is no commercialization on the Parkway at all - you must exit to get gas/lodging or food. It is tranquil and picturesque and it's a lot of fun to ride on a motorcycle. The elevations you can attain are pretty awesome. There are lookouts that you can pull over and stop to enjoy and take photos. Here is a link to all the photos I took this past summer while riding the Blue Ridge Parkway. The speed limit on the parkway is 80 - 90 km/hour with lots of twists and turns, ups and downs.

The entire experience riding the Blue Ridge Parkway was exciting, exhilarating and I would do it all over again in a heartbeat. The weather in late June, early July was . . . well in one word - HOT! - it was t-shirt riding weather with lots of sunscreen. About the only wild life we encountered on the parkway were dead Armadillos although keep your eyes open for other fast moving motorcycles. Stay in your lane while in the parkway because some of the corners are hidden and you can't see around them until it's too late.
