2nd leg, Motorcycle Florida - Ft. Lauderdale to Key West Motorcycle Tour 2012 - Our second leg started where we left off in Ft. Lauderdale FL and proceeded south on I75 to the keys - Key West FL, the southern most point of USA. Just south of Miami we picked up on Highway 1 South which is the only highway that heads straight down to Key West. This has to be one of the most picturesque rides we have taken so far.

Compared to all the riding we do in Ontario Canada, I have to mention here that the roadways/highways and interstates are so smooth and bump free that it makes for a very enjoyable motorcycle ride. Due to our cold Canadian winters and with the frost so deep in the ground our roadways experience much harsher environments and therefore tend to be bumpier and rougher in Canada.

Starting in Key Largo you are pretty much surrounded by water on both sides of the thin strip of highway. There are many places to stop and quench your appetite & thirst and fuel is plenty.

Marathon is where you will find the Seven Mile Bridge and this was a highlight of the trip. For seven miles you are riding this bridge and it appears and feels like it's never going to end. The cost of this infrastructure must have been enormous however I can see the need as there are hundreds and hundreds of businesses in these areas that all thrive because of this bridge and having to use a Ferry just wouldn't be the same.

Upon arriving at our destination "The Westin - Key West Resort & Marina" we were asked if we would like to upgrade to "Sunset Key" - Guest Cottages on a small island owned by the hotel. After a quick coin toss we were boat bound and wondering if we had made the right decision. Upon arriving at the island and specifically our cottage, "high fives" were celebrated all around along with a nice bottle of bubbly.... wow what a resort. This had to be the nicest resort cottage we have ever stayed in. The food at Latitudes restaurant on Sunset Key Island was excellent and the scenery breathtaking.

And of course the little miss's just had to get some chillaxin on the hammock!

On the way back up to Miami we had lunch at the famous Gilbert's Resort in Key Largo where we had an excellent cheese burger and fries along with a cold frosty beer and even a surprise visit from a pod of dolphins.
