Ride for Dog Guides
by Heather Fowler
The Lions Foundation of Canada is holding another “Ride for Dog Guides” and is looking for motorcycle enthusiasts to join in the fun.
The Poker Run fundraisier will start in Breslau (Cambridge) at the Breeding & Training Centre (3751 Chiligo Road) on Saturday, September 22 at 9am, and end at Rocky's Harley Davidson for a BBQ and refreshments.
“We are hoping to have 50 motorcycle enthusiasts register and raise $5,000 to support the various Dog Guide programs that we offer", says event organizer, Heather Fowler.
Lions Foundation of Canada is a national charity. Its mission is to provide service to Canadians with disabilities in the areas of mobility, safety and independence. Since 1983, Lions Foundation of Canada has operated Dog Guides Canada to provide specially trained Dog Guides to more than 1,700 men, women and children from coast to coast.
In addition to training Dog Guides for people who are blind or visually impaired, LFCDG also trains Dog Guides to meet the needs of Canadians with hearing and other medical or physical disabilities as well as an Autism Assistance Dog Guide program. “This autism program is wonderful. Children with autism do not often make friends easily” says Fowler, “and the soft, furry four legged variety we place with them are sometimes the only friend they ever have”.
Each Dog Guide costs approximately $20,000 to train and match with a qualified applicant but is provided at no cost. The Foundation does not receive any government funding, relying solely on donations and fundraising events like the Ride for Dog Guides.
